That this first record from 1970 was only the beginning of a multi-million dollar marketing license that continues to present day showing no signs of slowing down! It's mid boggling to think that no Sesame toys existed yet considering the volume of merchandise that has been made. Though it's likely that there were also some books published in 1970 too. I cannot think of any Sesame toys that were available in 1970, as the toy puppets did not come along until 1971, and the plush toys came after that, so it's very possible hat this record was the first Sesame Street item to be marketed. Lastly, I have not included the smaller 45 RPM records as they will require their own blog page, which is a project for another day!

Let me put it to you this way: I've been collecting these Sesame records since my childhood and have yet to find them all!īelow is a list of 99 Sesame Street records that I'm aware of (there's likely to be a few missing from this lists), of which I have 46 so almost half of the collection. As such, many record manufacturing companies wanted in on the action including Columbia, RCA, Disney, K-TEL, CBC, CBS, and Warner. Although toys and other Sesame merchandise were very popular, during the 1970's the most critical aspect to the shows marketing was a very extensive offering of Sesame Street record albums. There was major demand for Sesame records and they took the children's music industry by storm, becoming a juggernaut for sales. Of course Sesame Street was a huge hit on television, so much so that the program and it's Muppet characters spawned a merchandizing bonanza of toys, housewares, books and clothing which continues to this day, more than 50 years later. When Sesame Street began in November 1969 nobody knew for certain just how successful the show would become. These are just a few of the many Sesame Street records that were produced in the 70's and 80's.
